National ID (NID) Smart Card: Apply, Track, and Store Safely

24 May 20266 min read

The smart NID card is the most important identification document for any Bangladeshi adult — required for SIM registration, bank accounts, MFS, passport, property transactions, and almost every government service. Here's the full lifecycle guide.

Who needs it?

Every Bangladeshi citizen aged 18+. Lower ages get a registration receipt and can apply when they turn 18 or earlier in some cases (school enrolment, beneficiary purposes).

How to apply (new)

  1. Visit services.nidw.gov.bd
  2. Click ‘Register’ — fill date of birth + form number from birth certificate.
  3. Upload required photo + signature.
  4. Pay registration fee (waived for first-time citizens).
  5. Schedule biometric capture at nearest election commission office.
  6. Receive NID number immediately; smart card delivered in 2–6 months.

How to track an existing application

  1. Visit services.nidw.gov.bd → login with NID number + DOB.
  2. Or SMS: ‘SC <space> NID number’ to 105.

How to apply for correction

Common corrections: name spelling, father/mother name, date of birth, address. Apply online with supporting documents (birth certificate, SSC certificate, marriage certificate). Fee: ৳230–৳690 depending on correction count.

If you lost your NID card

  1. File a GD at local police station immediately.
  2. Apply for replacement online with the GD copy.
  3. Fee: ৳345 (regular) / ৳575 (urgent).
  4. Smart card replacement: 2–6 months; receipt is valid as ID meanwhile.

Store it safely in Volt

Take a clear photo of both sides of your NID card and upload to Moneybag's Volt vault under the ‘NID’ template. Why?

  • Always available when needed for online forms.
  • Encrypted — only you can access.
  • Number always searchable.
  • Safety net if physical card is lost.
Can I have multiple NIDs?+

No — having two is a criminal offence under Bangladesh law. Use the correction process to fix issues.

Does my smart NID expire?+

The number is lifetime. The physical card is functionally permanent but you may want a replacement if it becomes damaged.

Can I use NID for international travel?+

No — NID is only for domestic identification. Passport is for international travel.
