Driving Licence Bangladesh 2026: Renewal, Dates, and Reminders

24 May 20266 min read

BRTA driving licences come in two types and three categories. Knowing which one you have determines when to renew and how much it costs.

Licence types

  • Non-professional — for private vehicles only. Valid 10 years for ages 18–55, 5 years for 55+.
  • Professional — for commercial drivers. Valid 5 years.

Categories

  • Light — cars, jeeps, microbuses.
  • Medium — light + 1.5-ton trucks, 30-seat buses.
  • Heavy — medium + heavy trucks, large buses.

Renewal fees (2026)

  • Non-professional renewal (10 years): ৳4,150
  • Non-professional renewal (5 years): ৳2,000
  • Professional renewal (5 years): ৳1,400
  • Late fee: ৳400 per year + applicable surcharge

Step-by-step renewal

  1. Apply online at bsp.brta.gov.bd or via BRTA mobile app.
  2. Pay fee via bKash / Nagad / online banking.
  3. Submit medical certificate (issued by registered MBBS doctor) — for renewal.
  4. Submit existing licence + NID copy.
  5. Biometric verification at BRTA office.
  6. Receive new card in 1–3 months (interim certificate issued).

Common mistakes

  • Letting it expire — every additional year adds ৳400 fine + risk of fitness questioning.
  • Forgetting medical certificate (most common rejection reason).
  • Wrong category requested — once issued, conversion requires fresh tests.

Track expiry in Volt

Upload your driving licence to Moneybag's Volt. AI OCR reads the expiry date and you'll receive reminders 30 days and 10 days before — plenty of time to schedule the medical and online application.

Can I drive on an expired licence?+

Technically no — it's a fineable offence with ৳5,000+ penalties. Always renew before expiry.

Do I need to retake the test on renewal?+

Only if expired beyond 3 years, or if upgrading category.

Is the BRTA app reliable?+

Reasonably — but appointments fill weeks ahead. Start the process 60 days before expiry.
